Renan Fonseca da Silva

Renan Fonseca da Silva

PhD candidate

MSc in Coastal Engineering (Delft University of Technology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, University of Southampton), BSc in Environmental Engineering (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro)

Renan is a coastal / environmental engineer with over 7 years of experience working on coastal engineering studies and designs. After obtaining his MSc degree, he joined the research group at UWA, where he is currently a PhD candidate. Previously, he worked as coastal engineer at the port department of leading design firms, participating in diverse projects in the marine / maritime sector throughout the world, taking on activities such as coastal dynamics modelling, met ocean data analysis and coastal engineering design calculations.
His research interests are on wave-driven flows, wave-structure interaction, wave energy converters, coral reef hydrodynamics and coastal structures. In his PhD, he investigates how nearshore submerged structures (e.g. submerged reefs and wave energy converters) influence waves, currents and coastal processes. In his MSc, he studied the three-dimensional wave-driven flow over spurs-and-grooves, prominent features located in the fore reef of coral reef environments. Moreover, he was involved in research projects on rubble-mound breakwater under wave forcing, which included physical and numerical modelling integrated with site observations.
